Bollington climbs north-east of Macclesfield, a mill town of stone terraces, canal bridges and streets that gain height quickly. Palmerston Street and the roads around the aqueduct are the busy middle. Houses further up the hill sit on steeper approaches. Some homes are cottages with a door on the pavement. Others are later houses with a short drive. Flats appear in converted mill buildings, where the stair is the whole problem.

From 34 Market Pl we take the road out towards Bollington. It is a short drive, longer if we are held in the centre first. The van then has to find a place that does not block a junction on a slope. Cheshire East allows loading and unloading for a move, but a steep street with cars on both sides may only give us a short stop. If your door is up a flight from the road, say so. A carry of sofas on a hill takes more time than the same sofa on a flat estate.

Packing is useful in these terraces because halls are narrow and china cupboards are common. Furniture that has been in a cottage stair for decades should be photographed before we promise it will turn on the landing. A smaller van is sometimes the right tool for the last streets, even when the load would fit a larger truck on paper.

The library is on Palmerston Street, with parking behind it. Bollington Cross Primary is on the road back towards Macclesfield. There is no working station in the town. The Middlewood Way follows the old line if you want a flat walk once the boxes are done. Bins and council tax are Cheshire East.

  • Police

    Cheshire Constabulary

Use 101 unless there is immediate danger, when you should call 999. A van on a steep narrow street needs to leave room for emergency access.

  • Health

    NHS 111

Call 111 for urgent medical advice that is not a 999 emergency. Register with a GP in the Bollington or Macclesfield area after you move.

  • Health

    Macclesfield District General Hospital

The general hospital is in Macclesfield, on Victoria Road. It is the place for planned hospital care, not a drop-in for minor issues.

Moving in Bollington: common questions

Are Bollington streets too steep for a van?

The main roads are fine. Some terraces mean a slope, a tight corner and nowhere to leave the van for long. Tell us the street.

Is there a railway station in Bollington?

Not a working station in the town. The old line is now the Middlewood Way. Macclesfield station is the practical rail link.

Do mill houses need extra care?

Often. Stairs are narrow, doors are small, and furniture that has lived there for years may need to be turned on a landing.
