Practical tips for students moving in Macclesfield

Most student moves fit in a car. This is for the day they do not, and for shared houses with too much furniture.

Student boxes packed beside a desk

Students move twice a year and most of those moves are a car, a parent and a staircase. You do not need a removal company for that. You need one when there is a bed, a desk, a sofa the house owns, or no car on the day.

Make a list that is true

Write down boxes, the desk, the chair, the bike. Leave off anything a housemate is taking. A shared house of five people is one conversation, not five piles that appear when the van is full. Our student removals page is for that kind of load. If it has become a whole family home, it is a house move instead.

Pack books in small boxes. A large box of hardbacks is too heavy for a stair in the centre or in Hurdsfield. Label your room if more than one person is moving. Keep your laptop, passport and medication in a bag you carry.

Halls and houses

Ask the building when a van may stop and whether a lift must be booked. Arrive inside that slot. In a shared house around Tytherington or Upton Priory, a drive helps, and the hallway still fills up if everyone packs on the morning. Finish boxes the day before.

Parking in the town centre is the usual delay. Do not assume the street outside will be empty because it was empty at 7pm last night.

Booking

Get a quote with the date and the list. Quotes stay valid for 3 months, which covers a term date that shifts. End of term weeks are busy. Book earlier than the Friday everyone else chose. Insurance is provided. Ask us what is covered when you book.

Parents can book. The student, or someone they trust, still needs to be at the door. We will not guess which sofa belongs to the landlord.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a removal van for a halls room?

Often no. If it is clothes, books and a suitcase, use a car. Book a van when there is furniture the car cannot take.

Who must be there?

Someone with keys and the right to say what is going. Halls will not hand keys to a crew they do not know.

Moving tips

Downsizing in Macclesfield

A smaller home is a sorting job first and a van job second. Flats, bungalows and fewer rooms change the list.
