Council, health and library tasks after you move

Once the van has gone, the useful jobs are council tax, bins, a GP and a library card. Here is who publishes them.

Paperwork and a laptop on a table after a house move

The boxes can wait a day. A few registrations should not. This is a list of official places, not a guide to neighbourhoods. If you want the difference between the centre and the villages, that sits in the newcomer’s guide on this site.

Cheshire East

Council tax and bin collections are run by Cheshire East. The contact page is cheshireeast.gov.uk and the information line is 0300 123 5500. Tell them the date you became responsible for the address. Bin colours and days are not the same on every estate, so check the address rather than copying a friend in another village.

Parking rules, if you need them later, are also theirs. A move itself can load and unload without a dispensation. That is a different page on their site.

Health

Register with a GP as soon as you have an address they will accept. Repeat prescriptions do not follow you by magic. For urgent problems that are not life-threatening, NHS 111 is the line. Macclesfield District General Hospital is on Victoria Road, phone 01625 421000, via East Cheshire NHS Trust. Call 999 if someone is in danger.

Library

Macclesfield Library is on Jordangate, phone 01625 374000. Smaller branches exist in places such as Bollington, Prestbury, Poynton, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Disley, with shorter hours. The council’s library pages list what is open. A card is a small job that makes the first wet weekend easier.

What we do not do

We do not update your council tax, your GP or your driving licence. We move the furniture. House removals and a quote cover that part. Insurance is provided. Ask us what is covered when you book. For everything with a form, use the organisation’s own site and the numbers above, which we checked on 19 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Who do I tell about council tax?

Cheshire East Council. Use their site or the information line 0300 123 5500. Do not assume the seller did it for you.

Which hospital is local?

Macclesfield District General Hospital, Victoria Road, 01625 421000. For urgent advice that is not 999, call NHS 111.
